As a new church we have been in a sense pioneers. And as pioneers it is both an awesome privilege and serious responsibility to lay ground for the ministries of Cornerstone United Methodist Church. It is our goal to make Christ central in all our decision-making, visions, practices and priorities. As we seek the ministries that bring our future closer to God, we realize that we are all children under construction working together to be more Christ-like.
Cornerstone UMC began on November 5th, 1998 in the auditorium of LaVergne High School in the Smyrna/LaVergne area. Now we are worshipping in our first building on 10 acres of land adjacent to LaVergne High School. Construction was finished in August 2004 and we celebrated our first service together on August 22nd. God has blessed us with a home - a place to grow together in our faith.
The past has afforded us solid Biblical truth and traditions. While being connected to the past foundations of the faith, we seek to explore and create fresh ways to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ through contemporary music, dramas, liturgical dance, multi-media presentation and practical messages.
Our church represents a caring family of all ages. It is a place to feel safe, confirm values, express your feelings, join in laughter, build trust, explore your God given gifts, to teach and be taught, receive encouragement and seek support.
Even though we are different in age, color, education and socioeconomic backgrounds, we are one in Christ. Our diversity is a blessing as we learn from one another about our differences. Cornerstone is a place where you can be real and be accepted.
We come together to worship – celebrating God’s goodness and faithfulness in our lives. We all need encouragement, instruction, the opportunity to give of our time and resources and an unequivocal sense of God’s dynamic presence in our midst as we come before God.
Cornerstone UMC is a team effort. Each of us functions in a ministry to accomplish Christ’s mission. We must, therefore, follow Jesus’ example to serve others. At Cornerstone, the necessity to discover and use our God-given gifts is a foundational element of who we are. We no longer believe in just filling slots. We value the time you give serving in ministry and want it be meaningful, even transformational for you.
